The Wireless Source, Canada and its affiliates, PhoneBack, Canada, The Charitable Recycling Program and Wireless CellBack supported by Carbonfund.org have developed the RecyCool Program.
Integrating cell phone recycling with the battle against climate change
RecyCool makes it easy and affordable for any business, event or organization to reduce or eliminate their climate impact by recycling used mobile phones
The RecyCool Program captures pre-owned cell phone value for reuse and lets partners and participants receive this value as certified carbon offsets to help:
- Lighten your carbon footprint,
- Combat climate change,
- Reduce the effects of greenhouse gas emissions
RecyCool - Simple & Smart Ways To Help Combat Climate Change
The use and burning of fossil fuels produce greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, that contribute to global warming. These gases erode the ozone layer, creating the greenhouse effect and warm Earth’s lower atmosphere and surface. Climate change is one of the most serious threats facing the global society. We all need to make every effort to reduce our emissions as much as we can and offset the remainder. As Carbonfund.org says:
“Reduce What You Can, Offset What You Can’t™”.
While all of us can change our habits and activities to reduce our carbon footprint, there is only so much we can achieve. That’s where carbon offsets can help. Carbon offsets are simple. We are all responsible for carbon dioxide emissions, whether it’s by driving, flying in an airplane, heating and cooling our homes and offices, watching TV, running our business operations or going to a concert. Carbon offsets represent the act of reducing an equal amount of carbon somewhere else to counterbalance the carbon emissions from our energy-using activities (our “carbon footprint"). Carbon offsets enable us to reduce our climate impact by supporting projects that reduce carbon dioxide emissions to balance out one’s own carbon footprint. Carbon dioxide offsetting gives us the opportunity to compensate for the CO2 emissions caused by our activities.
Carbonfund.org also allows partners, businesses and participants in the RecyCool Program to choose the type of carbon-reducing project or activity to support. Renewable energy, energy efficiency and reforestation projects are available making it simple and easy to have your preferred impact on climate change now. After all, it’s …..

Greenhouse gas emissions are typically measured in tonnes (t - metric tons) of carbon dioxide (CO2) (or carbon dioxide equivalents for other gases such as methane). Carbon credits and carbon offsets are similarly quantified in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents or “tCO2e”.
Canada is among the largest emitters of greenhouse gases in the world, emitting about 700 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually or about 22 tonnes per person. Each person’s ‘direct’ emissions, from household energy and personal transportation, amounts to a little less than half of this total, or about 10 tonnes of CO2 per person. The rest is from commercial, industrial, non-residential and transportation sectors, essentially producing the products and services we make, consume and trade every day.
The RecyCool Program provides two simple and smart ways to earn carbon credits with recycled cell phones, smartphones and PDAs to help reduce your carbon footprint and work towards becoming carbon neutral:
‘Ten-For-A-Tonne’:
Collect used wireless devices donated by consumers and community members as part of a concert, conference or event, at a drop-off location, at an office recycling day or from a door-to-door collection campaign. A carbon offset of 1 tonne is earned for every 10 functional digital phones recovered. Perfect for:
| Musical concerts | Sports events | Charities and non-profits | Municipalities |
| Arts festival
and theatre productions |
Tournaments | Donation centres | Environmental and Ecological groups |
| Exhibitions | Trade shows | Community service groups | Other non-government organizations |
| Conferences | Sales meetings and retreats | Churches and Congregations | Schools, Colleges and Universities |

Handset Exchange For Climate Change:
For enterprise, businesses, government departments and offices and large organizations that often have large quantities of late-model phones that are regularly upgraded and replaced. Owners and managers can receive substantial carbon offsets from these late-model wireless handsets based on specific make/model/condition value. High reuse value means that a single handset could earn as much as 1, 2 or 3 tonnes (or more) of carbon offset to help reduce the carbon footprint of business operations and activities.

| About Carbonfund.org |
Established in 2003, Carbonfund.org is one of North America’s oldest and leading carbon reduction and offset organizations, making it easy and affordable for individuals, businesses and organizations to reduce their climate impact. Carbon offsets enable individuals and businesses to reduce carbon dioxide emissions they are responsible for in their everyday lives by investing in renewable energy, energy efficiency and reforestation projects where they are most cost effective. “Reduce What You Can, Offset What You Can’t™”.

“We are extremely excited to partner with The Wireless Source, Canada and affiliates, PhoneBack, Canada, The Charitable Recycling Program and Wireless CellBack in the development of the ‘first-of-its-kind’ RecyCool Program“ says Eric Carlson, Founder and Executive Director of Carbonfund.org. “By recovering and recycling pre-owned cell phones - something that everyone has, doesn’t want anymore but doesn’t know what to do with - many groups, activities, events and businesses can easily help reduce their carbon footprint, strive for carbon neutrality and combat climate change at little or no cost.” The RecyCool Program is a unique and effective ‘triple sustainability’ initiative for all Canadians:
Environmental Responsibility … Social Responsibility … Financial & Global Climate Responsibility
